Steven Horsford, NV Seniors Demand Mark Amodei & Congressional Republicans Stop Working With Trump to Cut Social Security and Taxes For Billionaires
Las Vegas, NV — Today, Representative Steven Horsford (NV-04) and Las Vegas seniors called on Representative Mark Amodei (NV-02) and Congressional Republicans to stop threatening to help Donald Trump cut Social Security to give tax cuts to billionaires.
Amodei supported Donald Trump’s proposed budgets which included cuts to Social Security all four years he was president – and Amodei sits on the House Appropriations Committee where Republicans recently released legislation that would dramatically cut funding for the Social Security Administration.
Amodei and fellow House Republicans also voted lockstep for Trump’s tax cuts for billionaires, and he recently signed a letter with nearly every other House Republican stating an intent to renew Trump’s tax cuts when they expire next year. The Nevada Republican, currently running for another term, voted with Trump 98.7% of the time during Trump’s presidency.
“Right now, there are proposals to cut Social Security that have been proposed by my Republican colleagues, some in the House, some in the Senate, some that are running to represent us in the White House……and they want to do this all while giving more tax breaks to the very wealthy, ” said Rep. Horsford, “Our message is hands off our Social Security.”
Today’s event at the Pearson Community Center comes after President Biden called out Republicans like Rep. Amodei in the State of the Union address and at multiple events across the country for wanting to “cut Social Security and Medicare to give us more tax cuts for the wealthy” while promising Democrats will “protect and strengthen Social Security and Medicare and make the wealthy begin to pay their fair share.”
Trump made clear recently on live television that he is willing to make cuts to Social Security. And earlier this year, the Republican Study Committee – which includes 80% of Republicans as members – issued a budget that would slash Social Security to pay for more tax cuts for billionaires and corporations.
“Mark Amodei and Republicans in Congress must stop threatening to cut Social Security in order to give tax breaks to billionaires. Democrats in Congress are promising to protect Social Security and ensure billionaires pay their fair share,” said Joe Van Wye, a Senior Legislative Strategist with P Street, sister organization to the Progressive Change Campaign Committee which has thousands of Nevada members.
P Street hosted today’s event with Social Security Works, Americans For Tax Fairness, and Nevada Alliance for Retired Americans. A similar event will take place on Wednesday, April 24 with Representative Dina Titus (NV-01) and her constituents in Henderson.
“As you have been told, the rich are not paying their fair share in Social Security taxes and other taxes to keep this government going. And they look to scrap Social Security and use that money to pay for them," said Jack LevVine, Senior Vice President of Nevada Alliance for Retired Americans' affiliated AFSCME Chapter. "These are people who are high up in big companies and they get a golden parachute... If Social Security goes down you can bet your bottom dollar that Medicare is the next one on the chopping block.”
“Preserving Social Security is not only a matter of economic prudence, but also a reflection of society's commitment to supporting its most valuable members and upholding intergenerational solidarity," said Donna Darden, a local Nevada entrepreneur, businesswoman, and grandmother who spoke at the event. "I stand before you a mom, a grandma and a great-grandma and I'm proud of all those labels because I know I'm putting my faith in Democrats that will and have protected Social Security, and will make billionaires pay their fair share.”
